How the Warays Greet Each Other on New Year's Day

The truth is, it is very rare to hear a Waray speaker greet his/her fellow Waray on New Year's Day using the local language. We just say "Happy New Year" to each other. The usual answer is "Happy New Year gihap" or "Happy New Year liwat." Both responses mean "Happy New Year, too." (The second version is how we say it in Northern Samar.)

Pick A Winner! (Nakontak Na?)

I was in the supermarket today and witnessed an interesting event. A very attractive woman dressed in her "power suit" turned into an aisle and furtively looked both ways, as if she were about to perform some illegal act. Intrigued, I spied around the corner and saw her with her finger so far up her nose that the knuckle on her index finger was almost entirely inside her nostril. She was obviously searching up in her nose for some crusty treasure, which she proceeded to extract while smiling to herself, looking at it lovingly perched upon her manicured fingernail.

Nakadto ak sa mall kanina ngan nakaimod sin makalilingaw nga panhitabo. Nakadto in sayo nga gihuhusayi nga babaye, ispoting ngan maupay an sul-ot. Nagpakadto siya sin sayo nga parte san mall: sa butnga san duha nga mga istante kun diin naka-display an mga baligya. Naglingag-lingag siya nga pareho sin mayaon hihimuon nga makadududa nga butang. Naintriga ak, ngan ak siya gin-obserbaran. Nakit-an ko siya nga haros an katunga san kanya tudlo nakadto sa sulod san kanya irong. Nagpipinanhanap sin madakmol nga manggad. Kanya ini ginhulbot mentras mahiyom-hiyom nga gin-iimdan nga nakada natungtong sa kanya di-kyutiks nga kulo.

A New Year Message in Waray

Sa mga igkasi ko Waray: salamat sa pagbisita sini nga blog, bisan pa kun talagsa la ak makagsurat sin bag-o nga post. Salamat liwat labi na gud sa mga nabulig pagtranslate dihan. Nanhihinaut ak nga ada kam sa maupay nga kamutangan yana nga adlaw ngan sa mga masunod pa nga mga adlaw. 

May ak igpapa-angbit sa iyo nga mensahe nga pirme ko nakakarawat kun tiabot na an bag-o nga tuig. Diri gad ak sini natuod pero igbutang ko la gihapon dihan basi updated liwat an iyo jokes hasta si  Internet. :-)

"Pagtapo sa bag-o nga tuig, likayi an mga prutas nga pili (itom) sugad san mansanas, ubas, pakwan, peras, chiko, basi diri masirum an swerte. Likayi liwat an ice cream kay matunaw an swerte.
